The 23nd Annual Conference of the National Council of Less Commonly Taught Languages and the 24th Annual Conference of the African Language Teachers Association are scheduled for April 17-19, 2020, (with pre-conference workshops scheduled for April 16, 2020) at the Crowne Plaza  Chicago-Northbrook, Illinois.The NCOLCTL/ALTA Conference Committee invites proposals for individual papers, colloquia, and poster sessions to be presented at this conference.

                             

2020 Vision: LCTL's Collective Mission in the Next Decade

 

The conference aims to pursue a new pathway for advocating innovative approaches in research and practices, maximizing professional exchanges and collaboration among LCTL educators, and leveraging resources and strengths in the less commonly taught languages community. We cordially invite researchers, educators, practitioners, program developers, and administrators in the LCTL community organizations to submit proposals and attend the conferencece.

Requirements for Acceptance

Proposals are invited for individual papers, posters, and colloquia.  All proposals must be submitted on or before 11:59p.m on October 1, 2019 (EDT; UTC-5).

Proposal Format

Title: 20 words maximum

Abstract: 60 words

Proposal: one and half page (1000 word Max)

Proposals will be conditionally accepted or rejected within 1-2 weeks by the program committee and notices will be sent out by email. The conference registration fee MUST be paid by March 31, 2020 by all participants if your proposal is accepted. Payment of the registration fee will result in a final acceptance. Failure to pay the registration fee by March 31, 2018, will result in an automatic rejection.

Only those participants who are registered by March 31 2020 and receive notification of final acceptance will be published in the program.

Participation Rules

As a paper presenter, each individual may make only one presentation. Individuals may chair or co-chair one panel or colloquium in addition to making one presentation. Individuals may not serve as both chairs and discussant on the same panel. If a participant is listed on multiple panels or colloquium on the program, they may be removed from panels and colloquium to ensure they adhere to the NCOLCTL participation policy. Individuals who do not intend to attend the conference are discouraged from submitting proposals. And presenters who know that they cannot attend the conference are asked to withdraw their proposals as soon as possible to give another presenter a place in the program. 

Submission Procedures

Electronic format is the only way in which Proposals/Abstract may be submitted for conference. We will not accept Proposals/Abstracts sent by email, hard copy, or fax.

Conference Tracks

Although proposed presentations may focus on individual languages, each paper should strive to address issues with relevance to many languages. Originality is Key. The focus of session topics includes;

  •  LCTL Teacher Professional Development
  •  LCTL Leadership and Advocacy
  •  LCTL Innovation and Technology
  •  LCTL Pedagogy
  •  LCTL Research
  •  LCTL Testing and Assessment
  •  LCTL Learner Diversity

Other topics for consideration would include heritage language education, bilingual education, interculturality, literacy, languages across the curriculum, personalized learning, Standards-based instruction, and professionalism. You must submit your paper inn one of the following presentatio type.

INDIVIDUAL PAPERS: Each presentation is allotted a total of 30 minutes: 20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for questions and discussion. A paper should focus clearly on issues related to the main conference theme. Papers may be based on original research or practical experience. 

COLLOQUIA: Each panel allows for extensive discussion on a distinct topic. There are two different blocks of time: 1 hour and 30 minutes (typically 3-4 presenters/discussants) or 3 hours (e.g., 5-6 presenters/discussants). Colloquium organizers are to address topics that will foster dialogue among attendees and also address the conference theme. Preference will be given to colloquia that cut across different languages or language groups. Only limited numbers of three-hour colloquia will be selected. 

POSTER PRESENTATION: A  poster session may focus on completed work or work in progress related to the teaching and/or learning of less commonly taught languages. They may be in either the traditional poster format (e.g., presentation of materials, or of research completed or in progress) or demonstrations of instructional or information technology. (NB, any proposal in this category requiring technical support must specify in detail the type of hardware or software needed). Poster presentation is allotted a total of 60 minutes.

PROFESSIONAL SERVICE SESSIONS AND MEETINGS

To arrange informal meetings for those who wish to get together to discuss particular topics, please complete the Meeting Request Form. Such arrangements include meetings with organizational member groups, language specific meetings, editorial board meetings, and other networking opportunities. Requests for meetings will be considered if the time and space is available. Please submit these requests no later than 11:59 p.m. (EST) on December 31, 2019.

All presenters will be required to pre-register and pre-pay for the conference in order to maintain a slot in the program.
